Flash Flash Flash every place has flash going on with a website. It is something that has really caught on in this “Web 2.0″ world (FYI: Web 2.0 has been around since the Internet started and is NOT NEW).

Flash is something that provides a very easy way to put animated, movies, music, etc on your website. Back in the day when flash was first put on the web it was something that was used for “Banner Advertisements” and the big one! “Flash Intros”.

Many web designers thought and still think that “flash” gave or gives a website a very professional look and feel, This is because not only could the web designer
1. Charge a person more for the website build but 2. it allowed them to boost up the portfolio they have. Thus this is why I feel the craze of flash is all over the place.

Of course this may upset, anger, irritate many designers (yes...even I have made flash intros in the past) I mean no disrespect towards any designers hard work, but let’s take a real look at what “flash” intros really do to a website (again this make look cool to have this I do agree with).

After looking at thousands upon thousands of “flash” websites, I can only really say I have come across a sparse few that I really liked or shall I say enjoyed. It was a non business website but a family re-union type of website…So for this site it did work, but will “flash” really work for a business? Let’s take a look.

1. Flash as most people know does increase the file size of the homepage. I feel that this is a major disadvantage of using so called “flash” intros on your business website as this is only going to increase the time it takes for your business website to load (not all people are on fast connections). With that said you are forcing your current client or future client to wait for your site to load…You also force them to see photos and or hear music they may not want to see. We all also understand that most people will know inside of 3 seconds if they are going to purchase your product or use your service. So do you think these people are going to wait till your “flash” intro is going to load? I really doubt they are.

2. Flash and SEO… This is not a good mix. It has been a major debate for some time now… Places like Google, Yahoo, etc are trying new programs for search spiders to start picking up on “flash” however the keyword being “NEW”. They are still having a lot of problems with this. In fact even they say to use a HTML site since the programs spiders are new.

3. What really is the purpose of “flash”? It really servers no purpose at all (other than looking cool…as I noted above). The grand old saying of “if your friend jumps off the bridge…are you going to as well?” really goes into effect with this. The bottom line is clients head to your website wanting to see your product (s) and to gain more information about your service. They are not heading to your website because you have some cool movie or sound… So do not use flash.

Now since I do have a open mind about all things. Let’s take a look at the good things when using “flash”… After all I did say it was something that I have built (mind you it was not the best idea to flash on this one website), I did have fun building it and was happy with the work.

1. NOTHING….(of course just kidding). Flash looks cool. It takes the plain old website that works and turns it into something that just looks cool. Hmmm a website with clients spending? Or a website that looks cool? You make the choice…

2. Flash is eye catching…If the animation and sounds blends well. It can provide very cheap entertainment for your clients.

3. It allows you to make interactive menus. You sure can build really nice buttons, etc. with flash. That is if your clients are into waiting for things to load.

All in all… As you can tell! I really am not into this “flash” look and feel of the new web 2.0. I would rather have something that is straight to the point and loads very fast. However you need to make the choice that is going to work for you, your website and your clients.

FYI. Should you choose to use "flash" I would say the following... Please be sure to include a "skip intro" down on the bottom right. It is always nice to be able to skip all the money a person paid to have the intro built

So what are your thoughts on this and flash?

This is one of the best posts i 've ever seen around Flash Technology.

Gongratulations.

From our point of view Flash is not only a "web design tool" .

1) Flash now comes with actionscript 3.0 , a very powerful and fast scripting language.

2) Flash supports "remoting" (like open source amfphp)
and can work very good with php , asp and perl. Database queries is no more a problem for Flash and Actionscript.

3) Flash is the "KEY" for live Video ( the mode that in our opinion , all websites in the future wil follow) . Flash works perfectly with Flash Media Server , Red 5 Server , Wohza Media Server allowing instant audio/video communications.

4) Flash is not SEO friendly . All major search engines are making serious efforts though.

In our opinion flash changed WEB and will continue to change giving priority to live Video section

I'd actually advise against using Flash on a hosting site simply because if a potential client is on a dial-up or somewhat slow connection, when it takes them a while to load the flash site they might be a bit dissapointed.

Thanks

First let me say that I agree with Olga100 that this is a great thread and one that we should continue adding various pros and cons to.

I agree that sites that are totally based on flash in general are quite annoying unless done with a very specific purpose which flash aids. Can we list any examples of those? Perhaps a flash developer might show all that can be done with flash, but that doesn't mean that the entire site should be flash. We have a small flash graphic on our corporate website at www.ingenuitynetwork.com (http://www.ingenuitynetwork.com).

I personally think that these sort of small flash graphics that have some motion can be useful to give a state of the art type of feel to a website.

Are there any other examples of flash that you like and why?

Are there any really bad examples on the web that you can point us to for discussion?

I have published a great tutorial on when to use flash on websites.

Check it out here: http://www.webhostingusers.com/a/680000/353/56/17/Tutorials/Web-Design/Making-Good-Use-of-Flash-on-Websites:-When-You-Should-and-Should-not-Use-It

By the way, you can rate and review the tutorials on our website. There is an option at the end of it, please check it out.

Since SEO with flash is an issue, I would like to find some good information on that issue as well. If you know of any, please let me know.

I like your small flash graphic. Blends in real nice and fits the site, loads fast and is very clean. Your site is a perfect example of the proper type of flash.

As for the bad examples, I will take a look around and compile a list of what I feel is a bad example and of course I will list some that I think are a perfect example.

Doing all this has brought another question to mind for me. Like:

1. How do you guys/gals feel about those "talking people" on websites that pop up on the lower right corner of sites? I ask because I went to a website for a client of ours who was having a major problem with a DNS transfer so we thought we would try to help out. Of course we failed because we could not stand the lady that kept showing up and talking! so we did not stay on the site long LOL.

Google sent out a letter talking about the new "spider" to help crawl flash websites...I will try to find that on the web as well and post it.
