Guess this would be a good place to put this post...Perfect for the lounge?

Question is: Does anyone use Social Media Marketing for business? Place like MySpace, Twitter, Linked In, Face Book, etc.

Of course we have set up accounts to all these places, however is the traffic worthwhile for the time spent setting up all these places?

Myself...I seem to be pretty torn if the traffic is that of quality, at this point I do feel it is a way to chat with other folks in the same field...but to gain clients (guess it depends on your industry) is another story.

Take for example...I have tracked a few hundred hits from these places, most hits obviously heading from profile links. Not one has turned out as new business.

So what is the point? are these hits just spammers lurking around, competition checking things out, etc.

If I was to break each one of these places down...Who would you think would be the best place?

I was reading a article that said the following when breaking down Social Media Marketing...

88% indicated they were employing social media for marketing purposes.

72% have only been using social media marketing for a few months.

64% of marketers are using social media for 5 hours or more each week.

39% are using it for 10 hours a week.

Over half saw a rise in search engine rankings

Now I am all for the placement of links to your site all over the place...However I for one do not really notice a rise in Search Engines because of these places. I do notice more overseas contacts.

Guess it may be safe to assume that I do not spend time on these type of sites (per the breakdown on hours spent) I am more of the type that will check maybe once every 2 months....Guess that is why I do not have 4 thousand people following me on twitter (lol).

Just thought I would put this out in the forums....What is your 2 cents on this?

I agree, there seems to be much buzz about this, but it is difficult to see how useful this is for certain businesses. If you can get into a group for your target market, then this could be helpful - sort of a word of mouth advertising. For web hosting, you would need to find webmasters / web developer groups to start with and if you have some success allow your customers to spread the news about your great services. The issue is, how many business professionals really have / take the time to be involved as the teenagers do on these sites?

Teenager products are heavily influenced by word of mouth / fads and could do well here. I'm thinking of acne cream and pg-13 movie promotions, etc. :)

Great response King.

Agree 100% about the teenage deal. I spent some time (loads of time really) working on the linked in site. We joined groups, started them, etc. and nothing. I did find it funny that on certain group forums we responded to questions about hosting, shopping carts, design, templates, etc.

Not only did we respond in a honest way by saying what we can offer but we even included other hosting places, designers, template places, etc. in our response. After all the bottom line is for the person to be happy.

We were pretty shocked to get an email saying "you have been removed from the group" So we get removed because we offered up advice? reminded me of Yahoo Answers.

Wondering if the group leader was a teenager and just did not like to see good advice.
