If your new iPhone does not connect to iTunes, but shows up in Windows as a Camera, here is the relatively easy solution.
The problem is that when you connect your iPhone the first time, Windows installs the iPhone as a Camera device. To fix this, you need to point it to the correct driver, which is a USB driver in Windows Device Manager.
Try these steps and it should solve this problem.
1. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed and you iPhone connected and recognized by Windows as a device (e.g. Camera, Imaging Device, Digital Camera, etc.).
2. Search for usbaapl in the C:\WINDOWS system folder:
- Open Windows Explorer (e.g. Right-click Start and then click “Explore”)
- Right-click the WINDOWS folder and select “Search”.
- Type in usbaapl and hit Search
- You should find the driver info in a sub folder of
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRVSTORE e.g. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRVSTORE\usbaapl_872A2434B7205D4BD84BBE53811BDCE15F347C5B
- Leave the Explorer window open because you will need this path later
If you don’t find the usbaapl.sys and usbaapl.inf files, then your drivers have not been installed with the iTunes install and you will have to reinstall iTunes. (If you need to reinstall iTunes, then when iTunes asks if you want to Repair or Uninstall, choose Uninstall and after that is finished, reinstall it.)
3. Locate the iPhone Camera device:
- Open the Device Manager, (using Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System > Hardware Tab > Device Manager)
- Look for a device called “Camera” or “Digital Camera” which will be under something like “imaging devices” or you might see it as “iPod”
4. Update the iPhone driver:
- Right click the device you just found in device manager and click on “Update Driver” – the Hardware Update Wizard will open.
- Check the “Install from a list or specific location” then click “Next”
- Check “‘Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install” and then click “Next”
- Here you should see the Apple Device to update, click "Have Disk"
- In the text box below copy and paste the folder containing the iPhone driver information found in step 1 (should be like: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRVSTORE\usbaapl_872A2434B7205D4BD84BBE53811BDCE15F347C5B),
- Click "OK"
Congratulations, you are done! The driver is now updated and located in the correct USB port.
